FUNCTIONAL TREATMENTS

These are the guiding treatments we apply to patients with skeletal disorders whose growth and development are continuing.

The most valuable aspect of these treatments is achieving results that we adults can only achieve through surgically assisted treatments, by taking advantage of the miracle of growth and development in children. This is why the importance of early orthodontic examinations is paramount. In a patient diagnosed with a delayed upper jaw at age 7, extraoral appliances called "Facial Masks" can be used to support upper jaw growth, eliminate midface collapse, and achieve ideal facial proportions. Alternatively, in a patient with a delayed lower jaw, once the growth spurt is achieved, the timing of which varies from child to child, permanent treatment can be achieved in as little as eight months.

With advancing technology, it's also possible to treat mandibular overdentures with clear aligners (Invisalign Mandibular Advancement) that incorporate advancement wings. These treatments allow us to straighten teeth during skeletal changes, shortening treatment times.

In functional treatments, skeletal expansion of the jaws and jaw advancements also help increase airway and improve mouth breathing, which are common problems in this age group, such as adenoids and enlarged tonsils that have not yet adapted to body size.
